Z4 Driver Storage Replacement

How to Replace the Driver-Side Storage Compartment on a BMW Z4 (Step-by-Step Guide)

If you drive a BMW Z4, you may eventually face the common issue of the driver-side storage compartment becoming loose, sagging, or refusing to stay shut. This is a well-known problem among Z4 owners, and while temporary fixes like adhesive pads or Blu-Tack may work for a short time, the only long-term solution is to replace the storage unit entirely.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to replace the BMW Z4 driver-side storage compartment, including the tools you need, how to remove each trim panel, and the steps to install the new part. This repair is simple and beginner-friendly.

Why the BMW Z4 Storage Compartment Fails:

  • Tabs weaken or snap over time

  • Clips loosen with repeated use

  • Cabin heat warps the plastic

  • Wear and tear prevents proper latching

Tools Needed:

  • Plastic trim removal tool

  • Torx screwdriver set (T20)

  • Replacement storage compartment

Step 1: Remove the Door Seal Trim
Remove the trim along the driver-side door sill using a trim tool. It is held by clips and comes off easily.

Step 2: Remove the Side Panel
Remove the Torx screw near the notch, then pull the side panel outward to expose the storage compartment screws.

Step 3: Remove the First Two Screws
Behind the panel are two T20 screws. Remove them and keep them safely aside.

Step 4: Remove Lower Panel Screws
Remove the three screws securing the lower trim panel to gain better access.

Step 5: Remove the Final Two Rear Screws
Behind the loosened lower trim panel are two more screws holding the storage compartment. Remove these to free the unit.

Step 6: Install the New Storage Compartment
Slide the replacement part into place, making sure the tabs and clips align. It should click securely into position.

Step 7: Reassemble Everything
Reinstall the screws and trim panels in reverse order: the two rear screws, the lower trim and its screws, the two T20 screws, then the side panel and door sill trim.

Your BMW Z4 storage compartment should now function like new.
